Quarantine 2020
Spring is renewal even in the time of quarantine,
twigs and grass create new homes
and birdsong greets me as math and ELA
sit upon the table next to an omelet and bacon.
School has changed, teachers and friends, zoomed;
puppies at my feet, emotions mixed. Sad, worried,
but mostly happy which is a surprise.
My nest is full, burgeoning not with chicks
but grown siblings returned; New York City
and San Francisco not safe anymore.
Mom's learned to make dumplings, flour miraculously found
(not to mention toilet paper). Family movie nights,
board games, home movies created,
epic Nerf battles fought in my yard.
Ride my bike six feet away from neighborhood kids...
unable to hug my Dad as he's a warrior on the front lines,
protecting our nest from Corona Virus. Six feet apart
and wearing a mask, my Dad listens to the birdsong
as I finish my homework and we count the days of quarantine.

Until today I had not read a younger person’s view of life during the Coronavirus epidemic. Your poem is honest, and presents what is happening in your life ... your family’s lives as well.
ReplyDeletePS. You are quite the dancer!
Thank you! Spencer says it was a class assignment, and his mom thought it was a good idea to respond with a poem :)
DeleteSpencer, I loved this account of your experience of quarantine. I like the authenticity, the wealth of detail, and the way you've structured it.
ReplyDeleteYour place sounds great to hang out in for the quarantine.I am not surprised you are mostly happy. I would be happy too except for the nerf battles in the yard. I suppose they are very noisy with lots of yelling and screaming( Shudder :)I enjoyed reading your poem.
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant, hope quarantine is not treating you too harshly. Stay positive and keep writing poetry!
